After years of planning and construction, the South Shore Line is set to expand with the opening of the Monon Corridor on March 31. With the official running of passenger trains, long-awaited rail access will bring transportation closer to home for Munster residents.
The Monon Corridor is an approximately 9-mile extension that will connect riders more directly to Chicago, making daily commutes faster and more convenient. The expansion includes three new stations in the region: South Hammond, Munster/Dyer and Munster Ridge Road. Located in northern East Chicago, the East Chicago station was previously the closest stop to Munster High School.
Train enthusiast and senior Jeremy Kaim believes the new stations will have a major impact on the community.
“There’s a lot of connection between Munster and Chicago,” Kaim said. “Right now, people have to drive to other stations like Hammond or East Chicago, and traffic can be a problem.”

With the new Munster/Dyer stations, that inconvenience may soon be a thing of the past.
“So having the Munster/Dyer station and the South Shore line expanding out really, really makes a difference,” Kaim said. “It’s a big difference for Munster residents who work in Chicago. They can just hop on the train without having to worry about cars, and they can go straight to Chicago.”
According to the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD), which operates the South Shore Line, the project is designed to improve regional connectivity, reduce traffic congestion and support economic growth in Northwest Indiana.
“I am very excited and proud to announce the completion of our long awaited West Lake Corridor project,” former NICTD president Michael Noland said.
Local officials also expect the expansion to boost development near the new stations, attracting businesses and making the area more accessible. For students and families, the Monon Corridor symbolizes not just a transportation upgrade, but a new connection to Chicago and surrounding areas.
