The week of April 19-25 was National Volunteer Week, and it’s an opportunity to recognize the impact of service. At MHS, media center volunteer Lois McClaughry has made her own impact.
After a fire destroyed the Munster High School library in 1981, the community came together to rebuild and restore what was lost. Now, 45 years later, McClaughry continues to volunteer her time.
Alongside media center specialist Kelly Hladek, McClaughry lends a hand to keep the book system up to date and organized.
“Lois works quietly and tirelessly behind the scenes to help make our books easier to browse, our space more inviting and our entire media center a more welcoming place for students and staff,” Hladek said.
When the media center was remodeled in 2022, Lois was there for the transition.
“More recently, she was very instrumental in helping the media center smoothly transition into its renovated space. She helped update the media center’s physical collection and participated in the genrefication process of both the fiction and nonfiction sections,” Hladek said. “These were huge projects. Lois is so dedicated that she will try and assist with whatever task is needed at any time.”
You can find McClaughry on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the library. Senior Kim Gomez shared a personal memory from when she was a student aide last semester.
“She’s also cheerful, always having a smile no matter what. I enjoyed volunteering with her,” Gomez said.
Anyone can admire the art in the media center.
