Any time you walk into a stadium, you feel the crowd’s energy. You see the crowd dressed up in their team’s gear. You hear the cheers and applause. The energy from the crowd can be seen and heard from every spot in the stadium. When I walk into any Munster High School game, I rarely feel this energy.
Since the beginning of the year, the student sections at games have been small and dull. The game starts with a lot of energy and a few points scored, but as each game progresses, the number of kids in the student section starts to dwindle; by halftime, there is no one left in the stands. Oftentimes, people leave when the team is losing, causing the confidence of student athletes to fall. Although students dress up for games, the themes are always the same and some are very uncreative.
What happened to the hype for games? What happened to non-stop energy and encouragement from the crowd?
Going to games is a part of high school and has now become something you only attend if you have nothing else to do with your friends.
Going to games should be more exciting. The energy should be up, and the themes should be creative. Supporting the student athletes who compete is important. With an enthusiastic attitude and support from peers, games will be more exciting, and the energy will be felt by everyone attending that event.
Hyping up players, actually going to games, participating in the cheers and sitting in the student section is all a part of the high school experience.
So, let’s rally around our school sports and activities and show our school spirit.
Let it be heard: we are Munster. Roll Stangs!
