Dear Indiana University Media School: we, the student journalists of Munster High School, are scared.
In July of this year, you opened your doors to young journalists across the state. Among them were some of the publications leaders of MHS. We were mentored in varying fields, from photojournalism to sports media.
After attending the week-long camp, we left believing our newfound skills would build our knowledge on journalistic ethics. But, little did we know, the same university that fostered our education wants to abolish their own student-run print newspaper.
Why would we ever pursue a major in journalism at the worst rated public university for free speech in the nation?
You have shattered the trust within the community that you “love so much.” You have placed obstacles for the current and future generations of Indiana journalists. You have self-sabotaged a school that was once renowned as a beacon of free speech.
Now, you’re attempting to create a false image of editorial independence and financial benefit for the University when, in reality, your prior restraint is costing IDS one of its methods of external income. Let’s be honest; the intention behind your behaviors was not to assist the student body, but to insist upon the idea that IU is a utopian fairyland.
Congratulations. You have pushed away future Media School applicants. You have made a mockery of journalistic integrity and shoved IDS into digital limbo. Do you think you saved Indiana University? Are you satisfied?
