Coming from southern Indiana, new superintendent Dr. Matthew Hicks knows a thing or two about being a leader. Before being hired in late July, Hicks had experience as an English teacher, a dean, a principal and the superintendent for Northwestern Wayne Schools. Observing and learning about the School Town of Munster, Hicks plans to follow the strategic plan that has been put in place for the next five years with a large focus on school safety and academic excellence in all Munster students.
“The most important [part of the strategic plan] is academic growth,” Hicks said, “That is the one that I am spending the most time on.”
In accordance with the 2025-2029 strategic plan, developed by former superintendent Dr. Bret Heller and stakeholders, Hicks is assigned to continue aiming towards goals set in place. As he follows this plan he must consider these three questions.
“What’s great about Munster that we have to keep doing? What’s something in Munster that we’re doing that we should consider stopping? And what’s something we should start doing here at Munster?” Hicks said.
Along with academic excellence throughout all Munster students, Hicks’ other main focus will be on improving school safety.
“I was the assistant principal in Noblesville West Middle School in 2018 when we went through a school shooting,” Hicks said. “Safety was already a priority for me, and it kind of became more of a priority for me.”
Being in charge of all schools throughout the Munster school district, Hicks will work closely with a team of many people to ensure the best possible results for all schools in the district.
“It’s my job to bring out the best of other people and try and find the best solution collaboratively with other people on the team,” Hicks said.
Coming into a school that has had a continuous reputation in Lake County and Indiana, academic excellence throughout Munster is well-known.
“I want [students] to know that we came here already believing that Munster was a great place. We didn’t move here hoping Munster was a great place; we made a solid bet in making the move. My kids are learning that real time, day in, day out,” Hicks said.
Moving to Munster didn’t only affect Hicks, but also his family. Hicks has three kids in Munster high school this year.
“My wife and I knew this was the right kind of place [for our children] to finish out their childhood and for me to continue my career,” Hicks said.
Hicks wants Munster to know that his focus is on the students and staff in Munster.
“It’s really about making sure students have the opportunity to perform at a high level, learn all the things they need to, and continue to grow,” Hicks said.
