Theater State Awards

  • The team placed fourth overall for their contest show, #Censored.
  • Senior Evvy Kikkert was awarded a $1000 Scholarship by the Indiana Thespians.
  • Senior Yumna Jawad received a Superior in Sound Design.
  • Eighth-grader Mary Kramer and seventh-grader Leo Sculli received Superiors in the Middle School Acting Category.
  • Sophomore Elle Dahn was selected for the State Thespian Officer Board.

Debate

Two Munster Debate students will take their efforts to the NSDA National Tournament this June as juniors Brandon Walker and Derek Kenning qualified under Policy Debate.

“We were spending three to five hours after school non-stop,” Walker said. “It was a lot of talking to walls and refining our speech until we could do it perfectly.”

DECA

Out of the 81 students who participated in the district competition on Jan. 11, 65 students from DECA will join the team at state in Indianapolis during the first week of March. For this season, students were introduced to a new program called Competition University, which works to help members improve their test scores. DECA saw an average increase of over 25% in this season alone.

“I’m most excited to see our members and teams show all the hard work and progress we have made this year,” senior vice president Junainah Ali said. “It’ll be an opportunity to connect with others and represent Munster while pushing ourselves forward.”

 

No School Feb 5.

On Wednesday, Feb. 5, there will be no school due to a teacher professional development day. The following Thursday will follow traditional schedule instead of block periods.

Art Club

THE MORE THE MERRIER The Munster Choir sang their Winter Dreams performance at the St. Thomas More Catholic Church on Dec. 8. Having showcased their talents at St. Thomas More Catholic Church with guest instrumentalists from the Northwest Indiana Symphony, the Chorale looks forward to bringing the holiday cheer to the Munster stage on Dec. 16. “It’s such a great feeling to go caroling during the season. When you watch Christmas movies that have a choir’s caroling, you know how it feels. It’s a really magical experience,” junior Jovi Savaglio said.

“WAVE THERAPY” Displayed at Indiana University Northwest in Gary, art teacher Elena Lopez’s “Wave Therapy” is displayed. Her piece was created with acrylic on canvas and linen. “We had a lot of discussion about whether or not the pieces should be sewn together or attached to something so that they could just be put back up much easier. I didn’t want that, because in my mind, I thought, if this ever gets a chance to be seen anywhere else, I might not have this size. I might have to pull certain pieces for that particular space,” she said.

CRACKING THE CODE Looking at a computer, junior Tatyana Glowa and freshmen Julissa Gil and John Bellahcen go through practice images in business teacher Ryan Popa’s room. The three students are apart of one of the three Cyberpatriot teams, Echo. “I started knowing practically nothing and quickly learned how everything works,” Bellahcen said. “I really love competition days where you and your team get 95% percent of the image complete and then have to lock in and as a team work through problems together.”

DUSTED OFF As sophomores Kate Huang and Rachel Siergey assemble supplies for their forensics kit, they unpacked old equipment including forceps and flasks. The Science Olympiad members are preparing for the upcoming tournament at Palatine this Saturday. “Science Olympiad constantly challenges us to think creatively, and I love seeing how our team improves with each competition," Kate Huang said.
